2023 LEAP Award - Applications Now Open!
The LEAP Award was established in 2007 in honor of Contemporary Craft Director of Exhibitions Kate Lydon’s 20-years of service. The program recognizes exceptional emerging talent in the contemporary craft field and provides opportunities for these early career artists to bring their artwork to the consumer market. The yearlong retail program features, markets and sells the work of one winner and four finalists. The winner also receives a $1,000 prize.
Local Playwright Premieres Modern Shakespeare at New Hazlett Theater
New Hazlett Theater is thrilled to premiere Pittsburgh playwright Nathan Wagner’s Perdita on December 1. Directed by Tru Verret-Fleming and with dramaturgy by Carnegie Mellon University's Kristi Good, the play follows Ethan Cole, a high school student struggling to navigate his senior year while being constantly interrupted by the ghost of a certain famous playwright.

Teenie, the preeminent photographer for The Pittsburgh Courier, one of the nation’s most influential Black newspapers, created an unparalleled chronicle of Black history and culture during the mid-twentieth century. In 1999, Carnegie Museum of Art acquired Teenie’s archive, and today, nearly 80,000 photos are available to browse on the Carnegie Museum of Art’s website.
History Center to Host “History’s Mysteries: The Allegheny Arsenal Explosion”
On Halloween weekend, the Senator John Heinz History Center – the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh – will host a book talk, “History’s Mysteries: The Allegheny Arsenal Explosion,” with History Center President and CEO Andy Masich and authors Tom Powers and James Wudarczyk of the Lawrenceville Historical Society, Friday, Oct. 28, from 6:30-8 p.m.

Handmade Arcade is delighted to announce the selected makers for its 18th annual Holiday Market, which returns to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center Friday and Saturday, December 2-3, 2022. A keystone of Pittsburgh's holiday traditions, the Handmade Arcade Holiday Market is the region's largest, drawing approximately 10,000 shoppers each year.
50 Years Later: Sports Museum Kicks Off Campaign to Honor Immaculate Reception Anniversary
The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, part of the Senator John Heinz History Center’s family of museums, unveiled a special campaign to commemorate the Immaculate Reception – the greatest play in NFL history – to mark its 50th anniversary this season.
History Center Free for Kids through October
The Senator John Heinz History Center – the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh – will offer free admission for all kids aged 17 and under this October, sponsored by UPMC, throughout the History Center’s family of museums.
GLASS CENTER RECEIVES $100,000 GRANT
Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) received a $100,000 grant from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation through its Frankenthaler Climate Initiative to support the construction of a thermal envelope for its expanded facility using new high-efficiency glass donated by Vitro Architectural Glass. This will be the first installation of this new technology in Pittsburgh.

Nuhu Osman Attah tells the story of how Helen Clay Frick saved the University of Pittsburgh fine arts program which included a new building to house the program, the Frick Fine Arts Building in Oakland. Art provided by Helen Clay Frick in the museum was discovered to be fakes!
Allegheny County to Light Iconic Sister Bridges
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced this week, that the county will spend $6 million to light the iconic Sister Bridges that straddle the Allegheny River, connecting Downtown Pittsburgh to the neighborhoods on its North Side.

Sculptor Inna Babaeva wins the Pittsburgh Glass Center 2022 Ron Desmett Memorial Award, which comes with $2,500 cash prize
The Pittsburgh Glass Center announced the winner of its 2022 Ron Desmett Memorial Award for Imagination with Glass, which honors artists using glass in experimental and innovative ways. New York-based Ukrainian multimedia sculptor Inna Babaeva’s willingness to take risks and think outside the box were cited in the announcement that she will be the recipient of a $2,500 cash prize as well as studio time at PGC.

That’s okay that he’s not a particularly good skater because he’s really good at making bad ass skate deck designs. Last Saturday .5 featured skate decks from a variety of artists.
