Charles "Teenie" Harris on PBS's Making Black America (Video)

Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s new PBS special Making Black America: Through the Grapevine features iconic photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris!

Teenie, the preeminent photographer for The Pittsburgh Courier, one of the nation’s most influential Black newspapers, created an unparalleled chronicle of Black history and culture during the mid-twentieth century. In 1999, Carnegie Museum of Art acquired Teenie’s archive, and today, nearly 80,000 photos are available to browse on the Carnegie Museum of Art’s website, plus a selection of his work is on view in our exhibition In Sharp Focus: Charles “Teenie” Harris.

The video below includes a section about Teenie at the 37-minute mark. Episode four, which can be viewed on PBS’ website, also showcases Teenie’s photographs!

You can watch all the episodes, including episode four, on PBS’ website. Click here for full series.
