Earth Day programs announced by Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy has announced a full schedule of free ‘Earth Month’ activities throughout April. The free programs and events will encourage Pittsburghers to get outdoors, immerse themselves in nature, and do their part to leave the environment better than they found it.
The Magical World of Roman Golla opens at Irma Freeman Center
Irma Freeman Center for Imagination presents The Magical World of Roman Golla. The exhibition opens on Friday April 1st, 2022 with a reception from 7-10 pm. In addition, there will be an artist talk on Saturday April 2nd at 1pm with guest curator, Robert Nowalk. The show will run through May 6th, 2022. Gallery Hours will be on Saturdays from 2-5 pm and by appointment. Irma Freeman Center for Imagination is inviting groups to book tours to view this fascinating exhibition during its month-long duration at the IFCI.
Handmade Arcade Announces 30 Emerging Makers Featured in April 30th Spring Market
Handmade Arcade will feature 30 brand new artists, craftspeople, and makers at its third annual Spring Market on Saturday, April 30 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Selected out of almost 200 applicants, this diverse group of regional artists hand craft products from playful clothing to joyful accessories to bold, colorful home decor. Hosted at Construction Junction in Pittsburgh’s East End, this free market also features live artist demonstrations, delicious fare from local food trucks, and more.
BE BLOWN AWAY BY NETFLIX STAR ELLIOT WALKER
They call him “Best in Glass.” We’ll find out on April 30 when Elliot Walker, Netflix Series “Blown Away” Season 2 Winner, comes to Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC).
Anyone who saw the glassblowing competition on Netflix that aired in January 2021 and is available to watch now knows that Walker can sculpt almost anything in glass. Rising to meet every Season 2 challenge, some of his creations included a perfume bottle shaped like a whale, a hat and matching tie, a human spine with lungs, and a cartoon character named Mr. Noteworthy with a telescope as a head. He also had some tragic mistakes and breaks during the 10 episode season.

Carnegie Museum of Art Announces Gordon Parks in Pittsburgh, 1944/1946
From April 30 to August 7, 2022, Carnegie Museum of Art presents Gordon Parks in Pittsburgh, 1944/1946, an in-depth presentation into Parks’s photographs of the Penola, Inc. grease plant in Pittsburgh and its workers who supplied essential goods to U.S. troops during World War II. This examination of an important chapter in Parks’s landmark career explores a narrative that is seldom told and still resonates today. The exhibition, which features more than 50 photographs that have not yet been seen by the public, will be paired with special programming, community events, and a publication featuring essays by artist LaToya Ruby Frazier and writer Mark Whitaker, among others.
Carnegie Museum of Art Announces First Round of Commissions and Partnerships for the 58th Carnegie International
Carnegie Museum of Art announces five commissions slated for the 58th Carnegie International that will be realized at the museum and throughout the city of Pittsburgh in the lead-up to the opening day of the exhibition on September 24, 2022. The 58th Carnegie International follows the geopolitical imprint of the United States since 1945 to situate the “international” within our local context.
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Community Youth Scholarship Audition
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School invites children ages 5 – 9 to audition for the opportunity to receive one of up to five full scholarships for the 2022 – 2023 school year (classes begin in September 2022). Students must demonstrate financial need to be eligible for scholarship funds (see below). To create as safe an environment as possible, children are required to wear masks and caregivers are requested to remain outside of the building during the audition.
History Center Book Talk to Explore the Teachings of Fred Rogers
The Senator John Heinz History Center – the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh – will host an evening with Gregg Behr and Ryan Rydzewski, co-authors of the new book, “When You Wonder, You’re Learning: Mister Rogers’ Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids” on Thursday, March 24 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Summer camp registrations open at Carnegie Science Center
For ages 4–18: Thrill seekers, nature lovers, space enthusiasts, music maestros, coding gurus, and curious explorers dive into hands-on, minds-on discovery at our 2022 Summer Camps . From exploring the science of amusement parks at Kennywood to designing robotic rovers and video games, the possibilities are endless for STEM discovery and excitement for all campers this summer.
BOOM Concepts seeks artist in residence
In 2021, BOOM Concepts modified its in-house programming from Unblurred First Friday month-long gallery exhibitions to a 2-month residency program. BOOM Concepts hosted 4 artists on site at 5139 Penn Avenue from April - November. BOOM Concepts also supported 3 additional artists with residency opportunities through a partnership with Radiant Hall that supported and provided studio space and participation in Radiant Hall resources from July - November 2021.
Flagstaff Hill restoration begins in Schenley Park
The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy today announced it will soon break ground on its latest restoration project on Flagstaff Hill in Schenley Park with an overall goal to preserve the site’s historic integrity, improve its ecological health, and increase its use.
Sophia Traczek Wins Regional Poetry Out Loud competition
Congratulations to Sophia Traczek, the winner of PCA&M's 2021-2022 Virtual Regional Competition for Poetry Out Loud. A senior at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, Ms. Traczek will represent the Pittsburgh area at Pennsylvania's Virtual State Competition in March 2022. Ms. Traczek recited “I Find no Peace” by Sir Thomas Wyatt, “Beautiful Wreckage” by W.H. Ehrhart, and “the world is about to end and my grandparents are in love” by Kara Jackson.
Benji.—The Warhol: Silver Studio Sessions
In The Andy Warhol Museum’s latest session, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, singer/songwriter, and producer Benji. joins us in our Silver Clouds gallery to record unique and minimalist versions of two songs from his recent album, Smile You’re Alive! Having developed as an artist in Pittsburgh, Benji. has recently relocated to Atlanta where he has joined the collective, Spillage Village.
Woodville is looking for volunteers
Woodville is a National Historic Landmark and 18th century home of the Neville family. We interpret 18th century life and the role of John Neville in the Whiskey Rebellion. The house is open April to December, and we host many on site programs!
Zoe Zenghelis: Fields, Fragments, Fictions comes to Carnegie
Carnegie Museum of Art announces Zoe Zenghelis: Fields, Fragments, Fictions, the first solo exhibition featuring the paintings of artist and educator Zoe Zenghelis in the United States. Opening March 26 and on view through July 24, 2022, the monographic show will celebrate the interdisciplinary breadth of Zenghelis’s art practice by bringing her independent work in dialogue with her collaborative projects and teaching methods, as well as with objects from the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition will be staged in the galleries of the Heinz Architectural Center at Carnegie Museum of Art, one of the nation’s foremost institutes for the study and curation of architecture. Zenghelis together with Theodossis Issaias, Associate Curator, Heinz Architectural Center, and Hamed Khosravi, architect and educator at the Architectural Association School of Architecture have collaborated at every step of the way to select and present this important body of work.
History Center Book Wins International Diversity and Inclusion Award

Easement acquired on former historic church in Deutschtown
The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation (PHLF) are pleased to announce that they have acquired a preservation easement on the former St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reform Church, located in the Deutschtown neighborhood of Pittsburgh’s North Side. The building, which sat vacant from 2006 to 2017, was recently renovated and turned into an apartment building with 16 units, and it is now known as St. Peter’s Residences.
