#150mmchallenge
The Johnstown Area Heritage Association and the Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA) are partnering to present a new temporary exhibition, #150mmchallenge — a 150-piece display of ironwork that was curated and produced by Delyth Done and Ambrose Burne of the United Kingdom’s Hereford College of Arts.
Kennywood Kicks Off 71st Edition of Fall Fantasy Parades
Kennywood, Pittsburgh’s Premier Destination for Thrills and Entertainment, will celebrate 71 years of Fall Fantasy Parades one of the park’s grandest traditions beginning Saturday, August 7. More than 125 marching bands from high schools and colleges throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio will fill Kennywood’s midways with live music during parades on select dates through August 29.

THE PALACE THEATRE OPENS ITS DOORS FOR FIRST LIVE NATIONAL TOUR IN MORE THAN 500 DAYS
After being closed to the public since March 13, 2020, Westmoreland Cultural Trust is bringing back live audiences to The Palace Theatre. The appropriately named “Happy Together Tour,” the first of many events scheduled at the theatre this year, will take place on Friday, July 30 at 8 PM.
Oil City Main Street Program Public Survey
The Oil City Main Street Program has begun preparing a voluntary design guide that will be tailored to Oil City’s three National Register-listed historic districts and other historic properties in Oil City. A consulting team has been retained to assist with this effort. The resulting design guide will provide guidance to property owners, tenants, contractors, design professionals, tradespeople, and others about the treatment and maintenance of historic buildings and properties. Use of the design guide will be encouraged to maintain and enhance Oil City’s authentic community character. No laws or regulations are proposed. Use of the design guide will be voluntary.
Wings Across Westmoreland - Unveiling in Mt Pleasant
The Wings Across Westmoreland project was inspired by artwork from Westmoreland Cultural Trust Incubator artist Patrick Mahoney. He created a pair of wings with iconic imagery of the city of Greensburg including The Palace Theatre and the county courthouse for WCT’s Art in the Alley, an art initiative located between The Palace Theatre and The Union Trust Building. The wings sparked popularity and interest on social media using the hashtag #WCTWings which inspired the Trust to expand the concept to other towns across Westmoreland County featuring artwork unique to each location.
Grant to help protect murals in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church
The Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka is receiving $100,000 through the Keystone Historic Preservation Grant Program. The organization will use the money to improve the building envelope of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. The church is home to one-of-a-kind murals painted by immigrant artist Maxo Vanka.
$1.8 Million Grant Will Enhance PHLF Lending in Underserved Communities
The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation is pleased to announce that Landmarks Community Capital Corporation, a non-profit lending subsidiary of their organization, has received a $1,825,000 grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, announced today as part of the federal government’s award of $1.25 billion in Covid-19 relief funds for community development financial institutions (CDFIs) working in underserved communities.
Contemporary Craft is holding two community dialogues in concert
Across the globe, women and girls make up a disproportionate percentage of the millions of people who flee their homes from political conflict, ethnic cleansing and domestic abuse. Faces Seen Hearts Unknown, co-sponsored with The Conflict Lab and presented at Contemporary Craft, explores these issues through two community dialogues on July 10 at 12 PM and August 14 at 11 AM.
Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival Tickets Available
Taking place live, in-person, from September 17-19, 2021, the 11th annual Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival presented by Citizens Bank will feature the legendary, ten-time Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan, who will perform on Friday at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. The line-up also includes performances from pre-eminent jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves; Grammy-winning instrumentalist, composer, and producer Marcus Miller, and many others, performing at the Highmark Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
Carnegie Museum of Art Announces 58th Carnegie International Opening Date and Curatorial Team
Carnegie Museum of Art is pleased to announce that the 58th Carnegie International will open on September 24, 2022 and run through April 2, 2023. Sohrab Mohebbi, the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International, has assembled a Pittsburgh-based curatorial team, an international curatorial council, and an advisory group to create the exhibition. The Carnegie International is North America’s longest-running survey of contemporary art and has been the museum’s signature exhibition since 1896.
Earthwalk Explorer Exhibit Opens at Heritage Discovery Center
The Earthwalk Explorer lets adults and kids experience projections of mountain ranges, forests, rivers and lakes, state borders, cities, trails, and cultural features. Putting your “feet to earth,” you can trek across the spines of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Alleghenies, or Adirondacks, or follow the river valleys of the Susquehanna, James, or Hudson. You can touch the highest point in the state with their fingers or point out your hometowns with your toes. The Explorer uses a horizontal scale of 1 inch = 3.88 miles.
History Center Partners with Nation’s Most Iconic Museums to Launch Inaugural “Civic Season”
The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will help establish a new nationwide tradition with the launch of the inaugural Civic Season, in partnership with the Made By Uscoalition and Civics Unplugged.
Old Economy Village Recruiting Volunteers
Old Economy Village located in Ambridge, is currently looking to recruit volunteers to assist in the various aspects of operations at this National Historic Landmark site. If you love history and like talking to people, you might enjoy giving guided tours. If you enjoy teaching or interacting with children, you can be trained to become a school tour guide. Garden volunteers are always needed for the extensive, flower, herb, and vegetable gardens throughout the Village and there are opportunities to assist in curatorial projects such as data entry of our artifact collection, scanning of books and documents and assisting with exhibits. We also need help with managing the front desk, our website, and even social media. No previous experience is required. Staff is willing to train you in any of these different areas of operation.
National Park Visitor Spending Contributed $28.6 Billion to U.S. Economy in 2020
The National Park Service today announced that visitor spending in communities near national parks in 2020 resulted in a $28.6 billion benefit to the nation’s economy and supported 234,000 jobs.
“The pandemic reminds us all of the importance of the outdoors not only to our economy, but also to our health and wellness,” said National Park Service Deputy Director Shawn Benge. “We are excited to welcome visitors back outdoors as weather warms and more people are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. We are expecting high visitation this summer and encourage visitors to explore our website as they plan their trips.”

Westmoreland Cultural Trust announces lineup for this summer’s TGIS Free Concert Series
Westmoreland Cultural Trust will welcome back music enthusiasts to the Greensburg Garden & Civic Center lawn when TGIS (Thank Goodness It’s Summer) Concert Series returns for its 17th year of providing free concerts. The live music program begins June 10 and continues every Thursday evening through August 19. Each week, guests will enjoy food trucks and beverages beginning at 5 PM followed by live entertainment from 6 to 9 PM. The Greensburg Garden & Civic Center is located at 951 Old Salem Road, Greensburg.
We Can Do It! WWII Exhibition Returns to Pittsburgh
The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will bring its popular traveling exhibition, We Can Do It! WWII, home to Pittsburgh beginning Memorial Day Weekend, this Saturday, May 29.
The traveling exhibition recently visited nearly 20 cultural institutions throughout Western Pa. as part of a three-year tour. The host sites were part of the History Center Affiliates Program, a network of more than 125 historical organizations throughout the region.
Pittsburgh’s public art could be likened to the city’s fingerprint. It is unique, celebratory of local voices, and a testament to its post-industrial landscape.
As public art invites everyone to interact with the creative spirit of Pittsburgh, The (New) Pittsburgh Exposition offers seven public art sites in and around the city that have helped define its civic art scene.
