The Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka is receiving $100,000 through the Keystone Historic Preservation Grant Program. The organization will use the money to improve the building envelope of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. The church is home to one-of-a-kind murals painted by immigrant artist Maxo Vanka.

Across the globe, women and girls make up a disproportionate percentage of the millions of people who flee their homes from political conflict, ethnic cleansing and domestic abuse. Faces Seen Hearts Unknown, co-sponsored with The Conflict Lab and presented at Contemporary Craft, explores these issues through two community dialogues on July 10 at 12 PM and August 14 at 11 AM.

Taking place live, in-person, from September 17-19, 2021, the 11th annual Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival presented by Citizens Bank will feature the legendary, ten-time Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan, who will perform on Friday at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. The line-up also includes performances from pre-eminent jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves; Grammy-winning instrumentalist, composer, and producer Marcus Miller, and many others, performing at the Highmark Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

Carnegie Museum of Art is pleased to announce that the 58th Carnegie International will open on September 24, 2022 and run through April 2, 2023. Sohrab Mohebbi, the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International, has assembled a Pittsburgh-based curatorial team, an international curatorial council, and an advisory group to create the exhibition. The Carnegie International is North America’s longest-running survey of contemporary art and has been the museum’s signature exhibition since 1896.

The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will help establish a new nationwide tradition with the launch of the inaugural Civic Season, in partnership with the Made By Uscoalition and Civics Unplugged.

Old Economy Village located in Ambridge, is currently looking to recruit volunteers to assist in the various aspects of operations at this National Historic Landmark site. If you love history and like talking to people, you might enjoy giving guided tours. If you enjoy teaching or interacting with children, you can be trained to become a school tour guide. Garden volunteers are always needed for the extensive, flower, herb, and vegetable gardens throughout the Village and there are opportunities to assist in curatorial projects such as data entry of our artifact collection, scanning of books and documents and assisting with exhibits. We also need help with managing the front desk, our website, and even social media. No previous experience is required. Staff is willing to train you in any of these different areas of operation.

The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will bring its popular traveling exhibition, We Can Do It! WWII, home to Pittsburgh beginning Memorial Day Weekend, this Saturday, May 29.

The traveling exhibition recently visited nearly 20 cultural institutions throughout Western Pa. as part of a three-year tour. The host sites were part of the History Center Affiliates Program, a network of more than 125 historical organizations throughout the region.

Please join us on a vivid and surreal journey into the life and mind of local artist, Kevin Osterhout. This prolific collection of incredibly vivid and intricate hand-drawn illustrations spanning almost a decade provides a glimpse into the subconscious of a brilliant artist who suffered from mental illness and substance use. Although this exhibition is not just a posthumous celebration of his work; It is an intimate portrait of a beautiful life cut short by the common perils of contemporary American society.
