GLASS CENTER GIVES $15 MILLION EXPANSION PROGRESS REPORT
The doors are open again after six weeks of major demolition and reconstruction at Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC), one of the top public access glass art centers in the US. The $15 million expansion is not complete, but everyone is welcome to take a glass class, watch glassblowing demonstrations, and explore the growing facility.
PITTSBURGH GLASSBLOWER ON NETFLIX'S BLOWN AWAY
Pittsburgh glassblower Leana "Quade" competes in "Blown Away" Season 4, a glassblowing competition on Netflix. All 10 episodes of Season 4 will be released on Friday, March 8, 2024. Quade, who is from Cleveland, lives in Pittsburgh and works at Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC).
Partial Closures JULY + AUGUST and Pittsburgh Glass Center
July and August are obviously hot and at Pittsburgh Glass Center it can be even hotter with temperatures in the glassblowing studio reaching over 120 degrees! At that temperature, it is nearly unbearable and unsafe to be blowing glass and making art. That makes this time of year the best time to cool off, turn off the furnace, and make repairs.
Pittsburgh Glass Center Announces Virtual Glassblowing
Pittsburgh Glass Center and the Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) have launched the first virtual glassblowing experience. PGC worked with a team of ETC graduate students over 15 weeks to design a virtual experience that educates, engages, and inspires middle and high students about the glassmaking process.
First Chance to Purchase Jigsaw
Jigsaw is a new addition to the Penn/Fairmount line designed by John Sharvin. Although Sharvin’s work is often whimsical, this set is purely practical highlighting his passion for both engineering and art. Sharvin designed the set with functionality and finesse so that the sunburst texture gives the pitcher and cups a glint of gold
UNDEFINED to open at Glass Center
After their experience on the Netflix series "Blown Away," England, Moran, and Sharvin were in transition moving toward an unknown future. They were invited to Pittsburgh Glass Center for a residency last year to consider their newfound fame and future and to create new work individually and collaboratively for an exhibition that they call “Undefined.”
Scholarships for Glass Center Winter Intensives Deadline: December 18
The Pittsburgh Glass Center studios are open to everyone who wants to learn and create. They offer a variety of scholarships in an effort to make our classes accessible to as many people as possible. Full- and half-tuition scholarships are available for all classes and workshops including winter intensives.
GLASS CENTER RECEIVES $100,000 GRANT
Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) received a $100,000 grant from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation through its Frankenthaler Climate Initiative to support the construction of a thermal envelope for its expanded facility using new high-efficiency glass donated by Vitro Architectural Glass. This will be the first installation of this new technology in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) launched a new, digital guide on Bloomberg Connects, the free arts and cultural app created by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Sculptor Inna Babaeva wins the Pittsburgh Glass Center 2022 Ron Desmett Memorial Award, which comes with $2,500 cash prize
The Pittsburgh Glass Center announced the winner of its 2022 Ron Desmett Memorial Award for Imagination with Glass, which honors artists using glass in experimental and innovative ways. New York-based Ukrainian multimedia sculptor Inna Babaeva’s willingness to take risks and think outside the box were cited in the announcement that she will be the recipient of a $2,500 cash prize as well as studio time at PGC.

Transformation 11: Contemporary Works in Glass to open at Contemporary Craft
Glass is itself a transformation: created when ordinary sand encounters extreme heat. In this breathtaking exhibition, glass is transformed again, this time by 17 contemporary artists from across the globe. The resulting work pushes the boundary of traditional craft techniques and takes glass from the realm of the ordinary to the extraordinary.

BE BLOWN AWAY BY NETFLIX STAR ELLIOT WALKER
They call him “Best in Glass.” We’ll find out on April 30 when Elliot Walker, Netflix Series “Blown Away” Season 2 Winner, comes to Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC).
Anyone who saw the glassblowing competition on Netflix that aired in January 2021 and is available to watch now knows that Walker can sculpt almost anything in glass. Rising to meet every Season 2 challenge, some of his creations included a perfume bottle shaped like a whale, a hat and matching tie, a human spine with lungs, and a cartoon character named Mr. Noteworthy with a telescope as a head. He also had some tragic mistakes and breaks during the 10 episode season.
Pittsburgh’s public art could be likened to the city’s fingerprint. It is unique, celebratory of local voices, and a testament to its post-industrial landscape.
