In the early morning of July 16, 1794, 50 angry and armed farmers approached the residence of John Neville, to demand that he turn over the tax records for the Federal excise tax on whiskey. Gunfire was exchanged and several of the farmers were shot...one fatally. On the following day, over 500 farmers surrounded Neville's house, which was now being protected by a dozen U.S. soldiers from Fort Fayette in Pittsburgh. Following another exchange of gunfire, and several casualties, the Bower Hill house and all of it's outbuildings were burned to the ground. This action was the beginning of the Whiskey Rebellion.
