Kennywood Announces All-New Phantom Fall Fest Halloween Event Coming This October
Kennywood, Pittsburgh’s Thrill and Entertainment Destination, will debut the all-new Phantom Fall Fest Halloween event on Friday, October 1. Play All Day, Fright All Night with family-sized thrills during the day and spooktacular scares for those who dare to enter at night. The return of Halloween activities to Kennywood adds 15 additional operating days to the 2021 Season.
Students Explore Fabric of Historic Pittsburgh Through “Experiencing Architecture” Program
A group of high school students spent three afternoons in July exploring the historic built environment of our city and region with the directors of our education team, as part of a four-week architectural studio program funded by the University of Pittsburgh’s Architectural Studies Program.

Kennywood Kicks Off 71st Edition of Fall Fantasy Parades
Kennywood, Pittsburgh’s Premier Destination for Thrills and Entertainment, will celebrate 71 years of Fall Fantasy Parades one of the park’s grandest traditions beginning Saturday, August 7. More than 125 marching bands from high schools and colleges throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio will fill Kennywood’s midways with live music during parades on select dates through August 29.
Grant to help protect murals in St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church
The Society to Preserve the Millvale Murals of Maxo Vanka is receiving $100,000 through the Keystone Historic Preservation Grant Program. The organization will use the money to improve the building envelope of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale. The church is home to one-of-a-kind murals painted by immigrant artist Maxo Vanka.
$1.8 Million Grant Will Enhance PHLF Lending in Underserved Communities
The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation is pleased to announce that Landmarks Community Capital Corporation, a non-profit lending subsidiary of their organization, has received a $1,825,000 grant from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, announced today as part of the federal government’s award of $1.25 billion in Covid-19 relief funds for community development financial institutions (CDFIs) working in underserved communities.
Contemporary Craft is holding two community dialogues in concert
Across the globe, women and girls make up a disproportionate percentage of the millions of people who flee their homes from political conflict, ethnic cleansing and domestic abuse. Faces Seen Hearts Unknown, co-sponsored with The Conflict Lab and presented at Contemporary Craft, explores these issues through two community dialogues on July 10 at 12 PM and August 14 at 11 AM.
Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival Tickets Available
Taking place live, in-person, from September 17-19, 2021, the 11th annual Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival presented by Citizens Bank will feature the legendary, ten-time Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan, who will perform on Friday at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts. The line-up also includes performances from pre-eminent jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves; Grammy-winning instrumentalist, composer, and producer Marcus Miller, and many others, performing at the Highmark Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
Carnegie Museum of Art Announces 58th Carnegie International Opening Date and Curatorial Team
Carnegie Museum of Art is pleased to announce that the 58th Carnegie International will open on September 24, 2022 and run through April 2, 2023. Sohrab Mohebbi, the Kathe and Jim Patrinos Curator of the 58th Carnegie International, has assembled a Pittsburgh-based curatorial team, an international curatorial council, and an advisory group to create the exhibition. The Carnegie International is North America’s longest-running survey of contemporary art and has been the museum’s signature exhibition since 1896.
History Center Partners with Nation’s Most Iconic Museums to Launch Inaugural “Civic Season”
The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will help establish a new nationwide tradition with the launch of the inaugural Civic Season, in partnership with the Made By Uscoalition and Civics Unplugged.
Old Economy Village Recruiting Volunteers
Old Economy Village located in Ambridge, is currently looking to recruit volunteers to assist in the various aspects of operations at this National Historic Landmark site. If you love history and like talking to people, you might enjoy giving guided tours. If you enjoy teaching or interacting with children, you can be trained to become a school tour guide. Garden volunteers are always needed for the extensive, flower, herb, and vegetable gardens throughout the Village and there are opportunities to assist in curatorial projects such as data entry of our artifact collection, scanning of books and documents and assisting with exhibits. We also need help with managing the front desk, our website, and even social media. No previous experience is required. Staff is willing to train you in any of these different areas of operation.

We Can Do It! WWII Exhibition Returns to Pittsburgh
The Senator John Heinz History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, will bring its popular traveling exhibition, We Can Do It! WWII, home to Pittsburgh beginning Memorial Day Weekend, this Saturday, May 29.
The traveling exhibition recently visited nearly 20 cultural institutions throughout Western Pa. as part of a three-year tour. The host sites were part of the History Center Affiliates Program, a network of more than 125 historical organizations throughout the region.
Phantasmagoricals Exhibit
The Irma Freeman Center for Imagination (IFCI) presents the work of Pittsburgh-native, Kevin Osterhout in Phantasmagoricals. Please join us on a vivid and surreal journey into the life and mind of local artist, Kevin Osterhout. This prolific collection of incredibly vivid and intricate hand-drawn illustrations spanning almost a decade provides a glimpse into the subconscious of a brilliant artist who suffered from mental illness and substance use. Although this exhibition is not just a posthumous celebration of his work; It is an intimate portrait of a beautiful life cut short by the common perils of contemporary American society.

Guests will be blown away by the roar of the glass furnace and the heated spontaneity of the glass art auction on Friday, September 17 at the Art on Fire/Meltdown Celebration and Auction. Date with a Docent
Carnegie Museum of Art visitors can experience the museum’s vast art collection and distinct architecture in a whole new way by booking a Date with a Docent on Thursday evenings. Led by one of the museum’s esteemed docents, these physically distant, one-on-one, and small-group personalized mini-tours offer visitors an in-depth look at a specific area of the museum’s collection, exhibitions, or architecture. Tours are free with the price of museum admission, which is free on Thursday evenings between 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. during the month of May.
Meadowcroft to Kick Off 2021 Season on May 1
Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, part of the Senator John Heinz History Center’s family of museums, will open for its 53rd season on Saturday, May 1.
Located just an hour’s drive from downtown Pittsburgh in Avella, Washington County, Meadowcroft offers a safe and fun outdoor adventure for the whole family.
Visitors of all ages can watch a blacksmith forge red-hot iron in a 19th-century historic village, use an atlatl (a prehistoric spear-thrower) in a 16th-century Monongahela Indian village, throw a tomahawk at an 18th-century Frontier Trading Post, and explore the prehistoric wonders of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter – a National Historic Landmark recognized as the oldest site of human habitation in North America.
Pittsburgh’s public art could be likened to the city’s fingerprint. It is unique, celebratory of local voices, and a testament to its post-industrial landscape.
As public art invites everyone to interact with the creative spirit of Pittsburgh, The (New) Pittsburgh Exposition offers seven public art sites in and around the city that have helped define its civic art scene.
