Gulf Building Spotlight
Once the tallest building in Pittsburgh, at 44 floors, the Gulf Building remains iconic in the city skyline.
With materials original to the day it was built, marble removed during enhancements and renovations is stored in the basement for reuse.
The tower is full of lots of brass, including its magnificent elevators. So much that a full-time brass polisher is employed to keep them shining.
Alcoa was once located in the Gulf Building with its own aluminum elevator, differentiating it from the others covered in brass.
The building is a survivor, withstanding a bomb attack in an elevator on the 29th floor.
Its iconic colorful lit mausoleum roof tells the city’s forecast, lights up black and gold for Pirates runs, and is often changed to show support for various causes throughout the year.
