Description:
The Armstrong Tunnel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serves as a vital link, connecting Second Avenue at the South Tenth Street Bridge to Forbes Avenue between Boyd Street and Chatham Square, passing beneath the Bluff area where Duquesne University is situated.
Constructed between 1926 and 1927, the tunnel was overseen by Vernon R. Covell, the chief engineer of the Allegheny County Public Works Department. Featuring twin bores of horseshoe cross-section, the tunnel bends midway and includes a pedestrian walkway on its western side.
Named in tribute to Joseph G. Armstrong, who served as the County Director of Public Works, the tunnel holds significance as a key infrastructure element in Pittsburgh's transportation network.
