Alumni Hall (Masonic Temple)
Location:
4227 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15260
Description:
Alumni Hall, situated within the University of Pittsburgh campus, holds the prestigious designation of being a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark. Originally recognized as the Masonic Temple in Pittsburgh, this architectural marvel was erected between 1914 and 1915 under the meticulous guidance of the esteemed architect Benno Janssen from Janssen & Abbot Architects. Notable works by Janssen in Pittsburgh's Oakland Cultural District also include the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Mellon Institute, and Pitt's Eberly Hall, formerly known as Alumni Hall prior to 1998.
Characterized by its classical temple design, Alumni Hall boasts a distinct architectural composition featuring a well-defined base, midsection, and an ornamental terra cotta pediment crowned with a clay tile roof. The structure predominantly comprises steel, encased in limestone with intricate terra cotta embellishments, while the rear elevation is constructed of brick.
