Description:

Allen Hall, located at the University of Pittsburgh, holds the esteemed status of being a Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark and a contributing property to the Schenley Farms National Historic District. Originally constructed in 1914, this six-story Greek Revival edifice, designed by J. H. Giesey, initially served as the domicile for the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. Today, it serves as the headquarters for the university's Department of Physics and Astronomy.

The genesis of Allen Hall traces back to its inception as the inaugural abode for the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, founded by University of Pittsburgh alumni Richard B. Mellon and Andrew W. Mellon. Originating from the university's Department of Industrial Research, the institute evolved into an autonomous research institution in 1927.

Architecturally, Allen Hall mirrors the Greek Revival style prevalent in the university's contemporary constructions, in line with Henry Hornbostel's acropolis master plan for the campus. Erected from 1913 to 1914 at a cost of $230,000, it was dedicated in a ceremonious event on February 26, 1915, wherein the Mellon brothers transferred the institute's custodianship to university Chancellor Samuel McCormick.

In tribute to Alexander J. Allen, a distinguished former University of Pittsburgh Physics professor, the building was renamed Allen Hall. Allen's notable contributions include spearheading the construction of the Sarah Mellon Scaife Radiation Laboratory, completed in 1946, which facilitated medical and atomic research through the production of radioactive isotopes using a cyclotron. Additionally, Allen played a pivotal role in radar systems development during World War II.
