Silver Eye Appoints Interim Director

Silver Eye Center for photography is excited to announce their new Interim Executive Director, Leo Hsu. Leo grew up in Pittsburgh and was deeply influenced by Silver Eye as a teenager experiencing photography. After many years away, he returned to Pittsburgh with his family, where he teaches in the Photography program at Carnegie Mellon University and had served on Silver Eye’s board for several years. Leo is a managing editor for the online photography resource Fraction Magazine, and was the director of online development for the photojournalism/documentary photography magazine and website Foto8.

Over the years, Leo has been a dedicated member of our photographic community and a dear friend to the gallery. He has written extensively about photography and co-curated several exhibitions at Silver Eye, and was on the curatorial team of the first edition of Silver Eye’s Radial Survey. Leo holds a PhD in Anthropology from New York University and a Certificate in Culture & Media.

Leo adds: “I’m honored to lead Silver Eye through this transition and to advance the organization’s mission of promoting contemporary photography as a fine art medium, supporting the work of emerging, mid-career and under-recognized artists, and sharing this work in Pittsburgh and beyond. Outgoing Director David Oresick has done so much for Silver Eye, moving from the South Side to its present location in Bloomfield-Garfield, creating the Lab @ Silver Eye, the Radial Survey, and redeveloping the education program, and raising Silver Eye’s profile nationally and internationally. He leaves Silver Eye in such a strong position, with a great board and a great staff, and a wonderful, constantly growing community of supporters and friends. I’m looking forward to keeping the exciting programming and projects of the coming months on track. I hope that all of our friends will join us for the opening of Fellowship 22 in two weeks to wish David well at his farewell event, and also for our cornerstone benefit auction in the fall.”

Silver Eye’s Board Chair, Alissa Meade states: “We are overjoyed that the talented Leo Hsu, former-Board member, artist, and native of Pittsburgh’s East End, has accepted our offer to serve as Silver Eye’s Interim Executive Director. I can think of no better person to help navigate Silver Eye through this important transition.” Leo will begin working full-time on May 2nd. Silver Eye's Board of Directors will oversee a search for a permanent Executive Director in the coming months.
