A Delight for the Senses: The Still Life

Opening November 2

Our next exhibition explores the beauty of the still life genre through paintings that range from the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age to the Gilded Age in the United States. A Delight for the Senses celebrates what was once considered a humble genre, focused on the depiction of familiar objects that entice the senses.

See the very first 17th-century Dutch still life painting to enter our collection—a gift of the late Drue Heinz—on view for the first time among favorites from our collection and works on loan. This exhibition opens to the public in Gallery One at noon on Saturday, November 2.

Visitors can learn more about the artistic process in two public programs on Saturday, November 16. At 1:30 p.m., hear photographer Charlee Brodsky in conversation with curator Akemi May as they discuss the history and continued tradition of the still life during a free event. Then, join Brodsky at 3 p.m. for a $10 workshop and learn how to employ lighting and composition techniques to create your own still life photograph.
