Description:

The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies sprawls across 292 acres (118 ha) in Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, situated about 20 miles (30 km) southwest of Pittsburgh. Established by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs' National Cemetery Administration, the cemetery was officially dedicated on October 9, 2005. Serving as one of the newest additions to the National Cemetery system, it saw its first burials on August 15, 2005. Initially developed on farmland, the cemetery also encompasses a small farm cemetery containing graves dating back to the late 18th century. Upon completion, it is projected to offer over 100,000 burial spaces. The cemetery's expanse of 292 acres (1.18 km2) welcomes visitors daily from sunrise to sunset.
