Description:
The Elmridge, also known historically as Elm Ridge, the James Gardiner Coffin House, J.G. Coffin House, or John Walker House, is a significant nineteenth‑century residence located at 1 Breck Drive in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania. Built in 1869, its architectural plans were published in the influential pattern book Hobbs Architecture in 1873, reflecting the popular Italianate style of the era characterized by low‑pitched roofs, decorative brackets under broad eaves, and tall, narrow windows that conveyed both picturesque aesthetic and refined domestic taste. Situated at the corner of Beaver Street and Camp Meeting Road, Elmridge embodies the architectural aspirations of affluent suburban residences in the post‑Civil War period of western Pennsylvania’s development.
Recognized for its historic and architectural importance, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and later designated a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark in 2007, highlighting its preservation as a noteworthy example of mid‑nineteenth‑century Italianate domestic architecture in the Pittsburgh region.
