Description:

The Duquesne Club is one of Pittsburgh’s most storied private social institutions, founded in 1873 by a group of prominent businessmen seeking a city club to rival the great gentlemen’s clubs of the East Coast. Its present building, completed in 1890, was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by the distinguished architectural firm Longfellow, Alden & Harlow, who were apprentices of Henry Hobson Richardson and brought his robust, sculptural aesthetic to Pittsburgh through this brownstone landmark.

The façades are marked by heavy masonry, round‑arched openings, and a commanding presence that anchors Sixth Avenue in the heart of downtown, embodying the civic gravitas and elite social stature the club cultivated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An addition by Janssen & Cocken in 1931 expanded the clubhouse to include a garden patio, barbershop, and upgraded kitchens, blending seamlessly with the original design and supporting a variety of social, dining, and recreational functions.

The club’s architectural significance was recognized with designation as a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark in 1976 and listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Over nearly a century and a half, the Duquesne Club has hosted U.S. presidents, international dignitaries, captains of industry, and cultural figures, and continues to operate as a private social club with elegant dining rooms, private event spaces, guest accommodations, and a world‑class health and fitness center — a living testament to Pittsburgh’s civic, social, and architectural heritage.
