Description:

Colfax Elementary & Middle School is a historic public school in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh and one of the city’s oldest continuously operating educational institutions, with its principal building completed in 1911. Designed by noted Pittsburgh architect Edward Stotz, the structure is an important local example of Tudor Revival and Jacobean Revival architectural styles adapted for an early twentieth-century schoolhouse, distinguished by its steeply pitched gables, decorative brick and stonework, and bands of large windows that emphasize light and ventilation in the classroom spaces.

The building’s stylistic vocabulary reflects broader educational design trends of the era, which sought to inspire civic pride and nurture the physical and intellectual growth of students through thoughtfully articulated architecture, and it occupies a transitional place in Stotz’s work between his more compact traditional school designs and later, more expansive campuses.

In recognition of its architectural significance and role in the development of public education in Pittsburgh, the school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 and later designated both a City of Pittsburgh Historic Structure and a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark. Over the decades, the campus has evolved to include a modern addition connected by a glass bridge, accommodating contemporary educational needs while preserving the integrity of its historic core, and continues to serve a diverse student body in grades K–8.
