RING-A-LING!

Did you know you know the Allegheny County Courthouse has a bell tower? Did you know it rings every day at noon?

"I was working out of a conference room in the beautiful and historic Frick Building across the street from the iconic courthouse one day. During my work my ears were suddenly filled with beautiful music. I looked up from my work to find myself alone with the conference room door shut. Confused and determined to uncover the mystery of this enchanting sound, I flung the doors open and leaned out of the conference room looking both ways, up and down the hallway. I saw nothing. Slightly frustrated yet still enjoying the music I moved to return to my assignment. As I turned I saw the Allegheny County Courthouse bell tower staring right back at me.

Now I'm downtown a lot, and at the time I was often downtown during the lunch hour but rarely in the Frick. I couldn't believe that this wonderful sound has escaped me thus far. After some thought it occurred to me that the traffic of the lunch hour has drowned out the bell tower's tunes as it was made for another era. Years later, yesterday, on a Sunday I was walking along Grant Street and heard a familiar sound, I looked up and saw my old friend." -Brian (PGH Museums contributor)

In 1888, the H.H. Richardson designed, Allegheny County Courthouse was completed. The building was designed in the Romanesque Revival style. Inside the building you can find incredible Vincent Nesbert murals and a beautiful courtyard outside of the courthouse. Check it out, its free to go in and walk around.
