Wisdom & Wine: My Dream Job Come True… Finding, Assessing, & Plugging Abandoned Oil & Gas Wells in Pennsylvania

March 23, 2023
Doors open at 5:30pm, Lecture begins at 6:30pm
Spend the evenings at Drake Well Museum and Park sampling the best wine our region has to offer while enjoying a presentation by Jim Samuels. Jim Samuels, Legacy oil and gas well abandonment manager: Jim’s first job in 1991 after graduating with a Chemistry degree from Penn State as an analytical chemist at a hazardous waste dump near Toledo, OH. His job was at that time was to determine what hazardous chemicals lie beneath the ground in thousands of buried drums and then to arrange for their safe removal, handling, and disposal. Although Jim found analytical chemistry to be challenging and sometimes exciting it wasn’t until 2011 when he was asked to step into a position as a legacy oil and gas well abandonment manager. Jim considers his work in the oil and gas industry to be his “dream job” and credits his strong science background, inquisitive mind, respect for the environment and respect for other people as his strongest assets that allow him to continue to work in this field today. Jim grew up enjoying trips to the Oil Creek valley with his father fishing, cross country skiing, and biking along Oil Creek. He appreciates the beauty and the rich history of the oil heritage region. $10 admission includes a lecture, wine samples, and appetizers. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Program begins at 6:30 p.m.
