Washington's Cherry Bounce

  • Woodville 1375 Washington Pike Bridgeville, PA, 15017 United States (map)

Please join us Sunday June 18th, 1PM for a Cherry Bounce demonstration

Among the few recipes known to have been used by the Washington family is this one for Cherry Bounce, a brandy-based drink popular in the eighteenth century. It seems to have been such a favorite of General Washington's that he packed a "Canteen" of it, along with Madeira and port, for a trip west across the Allegheny Mountains in September 1784.

Why is the drink called a "Bounce"? The word "bounce" is a "colloquialism for cherry brandy." It was renamed bounce as it might have been "sold without the required duty."

Please bring these ingredients. Free with admission and start time is 1pm until finished.

  1. Rye whiskey or brandy (one bottle)

  2. 1 pound of pitted frozen cherries

  3. Vanilla beans or extract

  4. Cinnamon stick or powder

  5. 1 cup sugar

  6. Nutmeg powder

  7. Whole clove or powder

  8. Large mouth glass container large enough to hold 1/2 gallon

Demonstration is on site, admissions costs (Adults $7, Seniors and Children $5)
