Talking Back: Women's Voices in the Oil Story

The second lecture of the Virtual Lecture Series will feature a presentation by Susan J. Beates, Curator of Drake Well Museum and Park. Her presentation, entitled "Privilege & Politics: Women's Activism in the Oil Region, 1880-1921," will explore how the wives of leading oil men became leaders in their community. Using the Victorian social norms to their advantage, these women championed education and community improvements, including increased safety for families, child welfare, morality and temperance. As the Victorian Era gave way to a new century, their activism increased, organizing community support for laws to enhance safety for working women and children, improved housing, education for workers and enfranchisement. They made their voices heard in the halls of power where previously, only male voices were heard. Come learn about a few of the women and the great impact their work had on the Titusville community. https://www.facebook.com/events/464306074721593
