TALKING BACK: Women's Voices in the Oil Region

The final evening of the Virtual Lecture Series will feature a presentation entitled "Working Out of Bounds: Women's Labor in Pennsylvania's Oil Industry by Melissa Mann, Site Administrator at Drake Well Museum and Park. While women worked both inside and outside the home during the early decades of Pennsylvania's oil industry, society attempted to place restrictions on their work. Gender norms of the period posited that a woman's innate nature, her gentleness, her delicate sensibilities, her morality, made her unfit for work in the public arenas of business, politics and industry. This presentation will explore the lives of women who defied convention, not only pursuing work in Pennsylvania's oil industry but succeeding in their endeavors.
