In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Senator John Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum will host Sensory Friendly Days, presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, from Monday, April 18 to Friday, April 22.
Throughout the year, the History Center is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible environment for all visitors, but the museum can sometimes be loud, bright, and busy.
As part of Sensory Friendly Days, individuals of all ages with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or sensory processing differences can experience “the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh” in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
In partnership with Autism Connections of Pennsylvania and leaders in the region’s autism community, the History Center will implement modifications for a more sensory-friendly experience, including but not limited to mitigation of sudden and/or loud sounds and motions, lighting adjustments, designated break and rest spaces, gender-neutral family restrooms, and increased directional signage throughout the museum.
Thanks to DICK’S Sporting Goods, the History Center will offer free admission from April 18-22 for individuals with ASD or sensory processing differences, plus one caregiver.

Special thanks to Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust for the ongoing support of accessibility programming at the History Center.
