Staff of Johnstown Flood National Memorial, in cooperation with members of the Friends of the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, will be hosting a Native Planting Day in the lakebed on Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Volunteers, Friends members, and staff will be planting native plants and shrubs and removing invasive species along the stream in the lakebed to enhance the riparian buffer zone. Riparian buffers are the natural vegetation along the edge of the stream bank. This important vegetative zone helps to control erosion by stabilizing the soil and reducing sedimentation by slowing runoff. It also acts as a buffer to pollutants entering the stream and provides food and habitat for wildlife.
Due to the type of work and our proximity to the stream, we are requiring that all volunteers be over the age of 12. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers must register for the event by email to the park’s Volunteer Coordinator, at Margaret_Speicher@nps.gov. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation with event details. If you have any questions, please call 814-886-6137.
