Hoeing and Growing: Student reflections on the Learn and Earn Program at the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation Greenzone Site

Come to The Lab @ Silver Eye and meet BGC’s Learn and Earn students, and read their reflections written on photographs made by artist and Greenzone Coordinator Vania Arthur, Greenzone intern Tatym Rasmussen, and Kuwame Kinsel Special Programs Officer.

This summer students in Partner4Work’s Learn and Earn program learned about reclaiming and rehabilitating vacant land, the history of red-lining and its effects on black/brown and low-income communities, types of funding and pathways to access them, the practice of landscaping, horticulture, bee keeping, construction & carpentry, sexual health and emotional regulation, art residences and creative careers, all while maintaining and connecting existing farms and gardens inside Garfield. Their final project was to design their own pocket park (a “mini” version of a parklet with  similar amenities to your average park space) to become a new space for joy, community, and a sanctuary for play.
