Gledaj! Vanka's Views -- Sketching Session #3 - Polish Hill

  • Immaculate Heart of Mary 3058 Brereton Street Pittsburgh, PA, 15219 United States (map)

Polish Hill - Immaculate Heart of Mary (Maxo Vanka, 1937)

Sketch a Fall day in Polish Hill with the Vanka Murals!

Session Leader: Ron Donoughe

$20 per person. Space is limited.

Registration closes on Friday, September 29, 2023

Maxo Vanka found Polish Hill to be an interesting subject, especially Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.  Perhaps it reminded him of his Croatian homeland or the historic churches of Europe. The incredible vistas, steep alley ways, and iconic Pittsburgh architecture has been a tantalizing subject for artists over the years.

The three-hour session will include tips from Ron on using your sketchbook and canvas as an observational tool, and as a way to experience and celebrate place. Participants are required to bring their own drawing supplies and welcome to bring a preferred form of seating although seating will be available. Each registration includes water, snacks and a gift from the Vanka Murals.

These sketching sessions are inspired by: Gledaj! The Gaze of Maxo Vanka on view through August 25th at the historic Bost Building in Homestead. Click here to plan your visit.

This program is part of a partnership with the Rivers of Steel Heritage Area. Funding was provided in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
