First Love / 初恋 / Hatsukoi
Friday November 1st through Sunday November 3rd
Prolific auteur, Takashi Miike, at his most fun and anarchic, returns once again with a noir-tinged yakuza film blending genres in the story of a young boxer and a call girl, who fall passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo. When one goes to see a Takashi Miike film one expects certain things. It has to be grotesquely violent, slightly tongue in the cheek and an over the top story that that would never work with anyone else at the helm. First Love delivers all that and more. A touching film that works on many levels - drama, comedy, action film and a thriller, where all elements fit perfectly. With its jazzy upbeat soundtrack and out there action, this is an energized piece of cinema that has to be seen to be believed.
