Description:

The Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation, based in Washington, Pennsylvania, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving historic structures in Washington County. It conducts its own landmark certification process and collaborates with the National Park Service to list landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places. The foundation provides guidance and support to historic building owners seeking to preserve their properties, and it has successfully assisted many in preservation efforts.

Over the years, the foundation has clashed with Washington & Jefferson College regarding the college's expansion plans, particularly in the East Washington Borough. Despite opposition, the foundation achieved the addition of the East Washington Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Tensions between residents and the college persisted into the 1990s, with disputes over property demolition and expansion efforts. Despite efforts to block demolition, including relocating some historic buildings, conflicts continued. In 2009, the foundation sponsored an architectural survey focused on African American areas of Washington.
