Description:
St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church is a historic Roman Catholic parish located at 89 Crawford Street in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Built in 1894 to serve the local community, the building originally housed Holy Trinity Church before becoming associated with the St. Benedict the Moor parish, which had been established in 1889. The church is noted for the distinctive 18-foot statue of its namesake, St. Benedict the Moor, that stands atop its tower, and it was designated a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation historic landmark in 1998. In June 2020, the Diocese of Pittsburgh formally designated St. Benedict the Moor as a personal parish for African-American Catholics, recognizing its long-standing role as a spiritual home for Black Catholics in the region.
