Description:
The Pennsylvania Railroad Station-Wilkinsburg stands at the intersection of Hay Street and Ross Avenue in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. Erected in 1916, this building replaced previous stations located three blocks southeast along Wood Street. Constructed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style, it boasts brick and stone construction with a vitrified tile waiting room and grand wooden benches. Initially serving three island platforms, modifications later reduced this to two, with one platform removed altogether. Access to the platforms was facilitated by stairways at several underpasses and a dedicated tunnel for mail and baggage delivery.
After the nearby East Liberty station's demolition in 1963, the Wilkinsburg station assumed some of its functions, especially for long-distance express trains serving the East End of Pittsburgh. However, commuter train services were terminated on Nov. 27, 1964. The Borough of Wilkinsburg acquired the building in 1967, repurposing it for various civic uses after the withdrawal of the freight agent. With the advent of Amtrak in 1971, long-distance passenger services continued until September 14, 1975, when Amtrak ceased operations due to low passenger traffic.
Despite its historical significance, the station fell into disuse. Plans are now underway for a comprehensive $6.5 million renovation project, including restoration of the exterior, enhancement of historic spaces, and modernization of utilities and amenities, all while adhering to historic preservation standards.
