Description:
McMillan Hall, situated on the Washington & Jefferson College campus in Washington, Pennsylvania, USA, stands as a testament to history, being the sole surviving structure from Washington Academy, constructed in 1793. As the eighth-oldest academic building in the nation still serving its original purpose and the oldest surviving college building west of the Allegheny Mountains, it holds a significant place in academia. Named after College founder John McMillan, it has been known by various monikers throughout its rich history, including the "Old College," the "Academy Building," and the "Administration Building."
Today, McMillan Hall houses essential administrative offices like the Office of Communications and the Office of the President. Its architectural significance, blending various European Renaissance styles, earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, highlighting its uniqueness and irreplaceability on a regional and national scale. Throughout the years, McMillan Hall has undergone several transformations, from housing dormitories and dining facilities to administrative offices. Despite these changes, efforts to preserve its historical integrity have ensured its enduring legacy, making it a cherished landmark designated by the Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation.
