Description:

Kennywood, situated in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, just southeast of Pittsburgh, commenced its amusement park journey on May 30, 1898, initially as a trolley park attraction marking the terminus of the Monongahela Street Railway, owned by the Mellon family.

In 1906, F. W. Henninger and Andrew McSwigan acquired Kennywood, forming the Kennywood Entertainment Company. Eventually, in 2007, the Kennywood Entertainment Company, along with four other parks, was sold to Parques Reunidos, a Spanish-based entertainment operator.

Renowned for its historic structures and rides dating back to the early 1900s, Kennywood shares the distinction of being one of two amusement parks in the United States recognized as a National Historic Landmark, alongside Rye Playland Park. Moreover, it stands as one of thirteen trolley parks still in operation across the nation.

Originally, Kennywood emerged from a picturesque grove owned by Anthony Kenny, fondly referred to as "Kenny's Grove," overlooking the Monongahela River. The Monongahela Street Railways Company, in collaboration with Andrew Mellon, transformed this scenic spot into a trolley park to boost weekend fare revenues.

Under the stewardship of Andrew S. McSwigan, Frederick W. Henninger, and A. F. Meghan, the park flourished, evolving from a humble picnic spot into a vibrant entertainment destination boasting attractions like the Figure Eight Toboggan roller coaster and the Old Mill ride.

Over the years, Kennywood's popularity soared, and it transitioned from a streetcar-served park to a beloved amusement hub featuring thrilling rides, swimming pools, and dance halls. Presently, Kennywood retains its nostalgic charm, supported by a devoted fan base.

Following the sale to Parques Reunidos in 2007, Kennywood continues to thrive, showcasing its heritage with slogans like "Welcome to the Family," "America's Finest Traditional Amusement Park," and "Make a New Memory." With its mix of classic wooden coasters and modern steel attractions, Kennywood remains a cherished landmark in the amusement park world.
