Description:

Hill's Tavern, situated in Scenery Hill, Pennsylvania, is an esteemed historic structure with a rich legacy. Unfortunately, it suffered severe damage in a fire that erupted on the night of August 17, 2015. Previously known as the Central Hotel during the early 1900s, the establishment later became known as the Century Inn, renowned as one of the oldest taverns in continuous operation along the National Road until the fire put an end to its 221-year history of continuous service.

Located within the unincorporated community now referred to as Scenery Hill, within North Bethlehem Township, the tavern's origins trace back to the late 18th century. The land, originally part of an area known as Springtown, was surveyed in 1785 for Isaac Bush, who sold it to George Hill in 1796. The tavern's existence dates as far back as 1794 when it was established at the future Hillsborough site by Stephen Hill, son of George Hill. Over the years, the tavern saw various proprietors until it became an integral part of the community.

Constructed as a two-and-a-half-story stone structure in the Post Colonial vernacular with Georgian influences, the tavern underwent subsequent modifications, incorporating elements of Greek Revival and Italianate architecture. It boasted a distinctive five-bay covered porch adorned with rounded columns and a rear stone wing that housed the original kitchen, complete with a large craned cooking fireplace. Before the fire, the building was meticulously preserved and operated continuously as a tavern since its inception.

In recognition of its historical significance, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission installed a historical marker at the site in 1952. Additionally, it holds designation as a historic public landmark by the Washington County History & Landmarks Foundation. The tavern was formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and is also part of the Scenery Hill Historic District.
