Description:

The Greene Academy, now recognized as the Greene Academy of Art, stands as an emblematic structure in Carmichaels, Greene County, Pennsylvania. This historic school building, constructed from stone and brick, rises two-and-one-half stories under a dignified gable roof. Originally erected around 1790 as an Episcopal church, the stone section of the academy was later expanded with the addition of a brick section in 1810. Over the years, it has served various purposes, including housing the Greene Academy, a distinguished educational institution. Notable figures like politician Albert B. Cummins (1850-1926) counted themselves among its graduates.

Following the academy's closure in 1893, the building found new life as a meeting hall for the Grand Army of the Republic and later as apartments. In the mid-1970s, efforts to preserve its historical significance led to a restoration project, transforming it into the Greene Academy of Art. This remarkable building earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
