Situated at the intersection of Washington (U.S. Route 19) and Orr roads in Upper St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, Gilfillan Farm stands as a testament to the region's agrarian heritage. Dating back to the mid-19th century, this operational farm has witnessed the evolution of architectural styles from the Greek Revival to the Victorian era, reflecting the changing tastes and trends of the times.
Throughout its storied history, Gilfillan Farm remained under the stewardship of the same family until 2001, despite the surrounding area transforming into a suburban enclave near Pittsburgh. Recognized for its historical significance, the farm secured a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and is presently overseen by the township's historical society.
Founded by Alexander Gilfillan in the 1760s, the farm flourished as one of the earliest settlements in the township, cultivating crops such as corn, hay, and raising sheep and cattle. The current farm complex, constructed between 1857 and 1868 by his grandson, John II, stands as a testament to the family's enduring legacy.
In 1976, the surrounding acreage was acquired by the township, paving the way for the development of a park featuring a 1.25-mile walking trail. Despite the transition, descendants of the Gilfillan family continued to reside and work on the farm until 2001. Margaret Gilfillan's bequest of the property to the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair, along with a $1.8 million trust fund for its maintenance, ensured its preservation for future generations.
Comprising 12 buildings nestled on a 15-acre parcel of land sloping gently westward, the farmstead offers a glimpse into the region's agricultural past. The main house, a striking two-story brick structure adorned with decorative wooden lintels and white pine moldings, exudes timeless charm. Inside, original finishings abound, from the intricately carved fireplace mantels to the slate and marble accents.
Connected to the main house by a breezeway, a brick wash house and nearby smokehouse add to the farm's rustic allure. Completing the ensemble are various outbuildings including a frame barn, stable, wagon shed, and granary, each contributing to the farm's rich tapestry of history and heritage.
