Description:

Historic Fairview Park, Assoc. stands as a significant African American spiritual retreat center and recreational hub situated in Salem Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Emerging during the era of Jim Crow laws, this destination boasts a rich historical legacy. Its landscape, ballfield, and a well-preserved late-19th to early-20th century frame barn contribute to its historical significance.

Established in 1945 by the Monongahela Valley Sunday School Association, comprising African American churches from Westmoreland and Allegheny counties, Fairview Park, Assoc. served as a vital refuge. In an era marked by racial segregation and discrimination, this park provided the African American community with a sanctuary of its own. Originally featuring attractions such as a roller coaster, merry-go-round, skating rink, swimming pool, and various recreational facilities, Fairview Park offered a diverse array of entertainment options.

In February 2011, Fairview Park gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places, further solidifying its historical importance. Even today, Fairview Park continues to serve as a cherished venue for both private and public gatherings and events. An annual highlight is the Fairview Park Association's Annual Picnic, open to all and held on the third Saturday of August each year.
