Description:
The Edgeworth Club is a historic private social and recreational club in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, established in 1893 to promote fellowship and social engagement among its members. In its earliest years, the Club operated from a rented house on Meadow Lane in Edgeworth, reflecting the intimate scale of late nineteenth-century suburban club life in the Sewickley Valley.
In 1898, a purpose-built clubhouse designed by the Pittsburgh architectural firm Rutan and Russell was constructed at the corner of Academy and Centennial Avenues in Sewickley. This building served as the center of Club activities until it was destroyed by fire in 1928. During the economic uncertainty of the early 1930s, members commissioned architect Brandon Smith to design a new clubhouse, completed in 1931 at Beaver Road and Academy Avenue in Edgeworth.
The present clubhouse reflects early twentieth-century club architecture, combining traditional design elements with a stately yet welcoming character suited to private social institutions of its era. Over time, interior renovations and expansions have supported evolving recreational and dining functions, while the building’s exterior presence continues to embody more than a century of social history and architectural continuity in the Sewickley Valley.
