Description:

Congregation B’nai Israel is a historic former synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood, built in 1923 to serve a thriving Jewish community. The building exemplifies early twentieth-century synagogue architecture with its classical proportions, symmetrical façade, and stylistic detailing that conveys both civic presence and spiritual significance. Recognized for its architectural and cultural importance, it was designated a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark in 1979. After the congregation closed in 1995, the structure found adaptive reuse as the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh Charter School, demonstrating the flexibility of such monumental spaces. In 2021, redevelopment plans began to convert the building into apartments, ensuring the continued preservation of its distinctive architectural character while giving it a new life within the Garfield community.
