Description:

The College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University is one of the oldest and most distinguished comprehensive arts education institutions in the United States, tracing its origins to the founding of the School of Fine and Applied Arts in 1905 within the original Carnegie Technical Schools. Officially established as a college in 1921, CFA encompasses five professional schools — Architecture, Art, Design, Drama, and Music — and has been central to the university’s mission of integrating artistic excellence with rigorous intellectual inquiry.

From the beginning, its programs emphasized both technical mastery and creative innovation, awarding some of the nation’s first degrees in drama and industrial design, and fostering a culture of cross-disciplinary collaboration that remains a hallmark of its pedagogy. The architectural presence of the College of Fine Arts building itself — conceived under the influence of Henry Hornbostel’s Beaux-Arts planning for the Carnegie campus — embodies that ethos: its classical symmetry, ornamental limestone façades with carved niches showcasing major architectural styles, and interior marble details serve as both a functional home for arts education and a didactic “textbook” of architectural history and theory.

Over more than a century, alumni have made significant contributions to the arts, from Broadway and Hollywood to international concert halls and galleries, while the college continues to evolve with modern creative practices through interdisciplinary programs, innovative facilities, and partnerships that bridge performance, design, and technology.
