Description:

The Buchanan Furnace stands as a historic iron furnace situated in Licking Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. Erected in 1844, this cold blast charcoal furnace boasts dimensions of 30 feet by 33 feet at the base and stands 33 feet tall. With a maximum production capacity of 1,200 tons per year, it played a significant role in regional iron production until its abandonment in 1858 due to a shortage of timber for fuel.

During the mid-19th century, Clarion County witnessed the construction of thirty-one iron furnaces, primarily between 1840 and 1850. These furnaces served both the local region and the Pittsburgh rolling mills, contributing to the economic development of the area.

Recognizing its historical importance, the Buchanan Furnace was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
