Description:

Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal congregation located at 1400 Boyle Street in the Central Northside (Allegheny City Central) neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Built in 1903 after a cyclone destroyed its predecessor, the church features a striking yellow brick exterior and a richly adorned sanctuary filled with vibrant stained‑glass windows. Brown Chapel’s congregation traces its roots to around 1837, making it one of the longest continuously serving Black churches in the city—and the oldest to remain at its original location. With deep community ties, the church was designated a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation historic landmark in 1988.

Beyond worship, Brown Chapel plays an active role in community life, offering services such as a food bank, community breakfasts, educational support, health fairs, grief counseling, and specialized ministries like Daniel’s Den for cancer support and the “Circle of Courage” banquet honoring local acts of faith and charity. Under the leadership of Reverend Aisha I. Tate—the first woman pastor appointed here—Brown Chapel earned a prestigious “Preserving Black Churches” grant in 2023 to restore its historic stained‑glass windows, a project driven by her vision and community devotion.
