Description:

Allegheny County Office Building is a historic government facility in downtown Pittsburgh, constructed between 1929 and 1931 as part of a coordinated effort to centralize county administrative functions during a period of urban expansion and modernization. Designed in the Classical Revival style, the building features a monumental limestone façade, symmetrical massing, and carefully articulated pilasters and cornices that convey civic authority and permanence. The structure’s large, regularly spaced windows, decorative metalwork, and formal entrance portals exemplify the restrained ornamentation typical of interwar civic architecture, balancing elegance with the practical needs of a multi‑story office building. Recognized for its architectural and historical significance, the Allegheny County Office Building was designated a Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmark in 2002. Today, it continues to house county offices, maintaining its role as a key component of Pittsburgh’s governmental infrastructure while standing as a preserved example of early twentieth‑century civic architecture.
