Description:

The Academy Hill Historic District in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is delineated by Baughman Street, North Maple Avenue, Kenneth Street, Culbertson Avenue, Beacon Street, and North Main Street. Spanning approximately 63.5 acres (0.257 km2), this district comprises 252 structures, with the most notable buildings dating from 1880 to 1949. Among these structures, the earliest, a former farmhouse located at 333 Walnut Avenue, dates back to 1840. Situated immediately north of the Greensburg Downtown Historic District, the Academy Hill Historic District has a predominantly institutional character in its southern portion, housing notable landmarks such as the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, its parish school, and the former Greensburg public high school, now repurposed as a middle school.

The area bounded by Main Street, Academy Hill Place, Maple Avenue, and Grant Street has served as the location for public schools since 1810, with the original school building from that year lending its name to the neighborhood. Moving along Main Street towards the north, one encounters stately homes and mansions constructed for the city's affluent residents, with some designed by architect Paul Bartholomew. Conversely, as one progresses eastward from Main Street, the architectural grandeur diminishes, transitioning into more modest residences. The streets running north to south east of Maple Avenue are characterized by relatively humble houses, representing middle-class and working-class residential architecture prevalent in the pre-World War II era.
