WWII Merchant Marine Veteran Howard Pfeifer receives the Medal of Ushakov.

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust, Inc. is honored and proud to have so many veterans from our region as members of our Board of Directors and committees. Although the board membership is not limited to veterans, the majority of seats are occupied by service members from past and current generations. Over the years, we’ve been also honored to have members from all branches of service sitting on our leadership team - - including the Merchant Marines. So, it is our pleasure and our honor to share this recently published article about two local Merchant Marine veterans, including one of our board members, WWII Merchant Marine Veteran Howard Pfeifer. Before COVID-19 altered the plans, Soldiers & Sailors was slated to be the location where Russia intended to present Howard Pfeifer with the Medal of Ushakov for his service and actions in support of Russia during WWII. I’m sure many of you will not only obtain a new appreciation for the Merchant Marines, but will learn more about it and sailors like Howard. Click on the button to read the Post-Gazette article.
