Upcoming at the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center

Winter will soon be in full swing, but we have plenty of programs to keep you busy during the long days ahead, including our popular Snow Day Saturday and Groundhog Day Weekend festivities!

Read on below to see what's coming up and remember, our interactive exhibits are always available for some fun during the holidays!

Winter Wonders

Friday & Saturday, Dec. 27 & 28, 1-4 p.m.

Two days, two winter topics to explore!

On Friday learn "Why is it Cold?" On Saturday, discover "Snowstorms!" Each day includes activities, crafts, and interactive learning, plus free time on the exhibits and a snack.

Cost is $10 for one day, $18 for both days.

Girl Scouts Get Outdoors

Winter Challenge Day

Saturday, Jan. 4, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

$5 per Scout

Girl Scouts at all levels can check several items off the Outdoor Winter Challenge list by attending this program. Here’s what you’ll do:

Learn about frostbite and hypothermia, identify winter constellations, make paper snowflake cutouts, learn about avalanches, draw pictures of winter scenes, make a Winter Nature Journal, go on a 1/2-mile hike and nature walk, identify trees, look for bird nests, watch for animals, do a winter scavenger hunt, drink hot chocolate outside.

Important Note: Girls will do the first 6 activities beginning at 10 a.m. at the Weather Discovery Center. The remaining activities, beginning with the walk, will be on the Mahoning Shadow Trail at the trailhead off Elk St. at the Thomas Barletta Skate Park. Girls must have their own transportation to the trailhead. Please dress appropriately for a winter walk!

A portion of the cost of this event is being underwritten by a generous donor who supports the idea of getting people of all ages to spend time out of doors.

The cost per Scout is just $5.

Snow Day Saturday

Saturday, Jan. 18, 1-3 p.m.

$7.00 per person

It’s a day full of SNOW much fun! Including:

Snow relay races, snowball games, making your own snow, snow crafts, build your own snowman interactive game, snowball snack and hot chocolate, and the annual famous snowball fight

Cost is $7 per person and includes free time on the exhibits. Preregistration is appreciated but walk-ins will be welcome! 814-938-1000 or info@weatherdiscovery.org

Groundhog Day Weekend

Friday, Jan. 31 - Sunday, Feb. 2

Fri: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sat: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sun: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Groundhog Day Weekend festivities will kick off on Friday, Jan. 31 and continue through Sunday, Feb. 2. Regular admission of $7.00 per person, children 2 and under free. Here's what we have planned:

All three days, stop by to enjoy our interactive exhibits and for free activities- give our scavenger hunt a try and make a free groundhog mask or groundhog finger puppet in our classroom.

Sat., Feb. 1 at 12 Noon: Meteorologist Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. See the 2020 inducted into our Hall of Fame. The ceremony begins at noon with cookies and punch to follow, and a chance to meet Punxsutawney Phil!

Sun., Feb. 2 at 3 p.m.: Drawing for the Diamond Groundhog Necklace Raffle Winner. Tickets will be available all three days. The cost per ticket is $10. Ask to see the necklace when you stop by!
