Vanka Murals’ annual fundraiser -- the 7th Annual Cocktails & Conservation – is on Thursday, November 5 . Attendees of the virtual and global celebration will add to their support for the preservation of Maxo Vanka’s Murals through the Art of Social Justice Art Auction: the annual opportunity to celebrate one artist by appreciating, supporting and buying the works of others!

DESCRIPTION OF ARTWORK

The Vanka Murals seeks original artwork in any visual medium (no larger than 16” x 20” and framed if possible). We especially welcome pieces inspired by the themes within the Vanka Murals. Contributed items will echo Vanka’s powerful commentary on social and political issues of the day and to celebrate and tell the story of a community.

Once the tallest building in Pittsburgh, at 44 floors, the Gulf Building remains iconic in the city skyline. It has materials original to the day it was built, and marble removed during enhancements and renovations is stored in the basement for reuse. The tower is full of lots of brass, including its magnificent elevators. There is so much brass that a full-time brass polisher is employed to keep them shining. Alcoa was once located in the Gulf Building with its own aluminum elevator, differentiating it from the others covered in brass. The building is a survivor, withstanding a bomb attack in an elevator on the 29th floor. Its iconic colorful lit mausoleum roof tells the city’s forecast, lights up black and gold for Pirates runs, and is often changed to show support for various causes throughout the year.

Let us know what building you want to see featured and we will try to make it happen!
