Somewhere Else Workshop at Boom Concepts

Let the places in your head out into the world!
Come create your own "Somewhere Else" Nov 23rd at BOOM Concepts from 11AM-2PM.

About the Show

Dreaming of cities and places that come and go out of our memories. Growing up in Aliquippa, I saw a thriving city come and dissolve back into the earth. Remnants of staircases to overgrown plots, drywall, and fireplaces hanging on to the shared remaining wall like ghosts. Each crumbling building revealed a new truth of systems of pipes and wires, hid behind the facades. It’s the end of our human stories and the beginning of the earth taking it back.

This visual language of drawing, cutting, and layering shapes to make cityscapes came out of my own escape from a traumatic experience. The meditation of drawing with a malleable logic built on what could be someplace familiar or no place that actually exists. Somewhere Else is known unknown.

About Nina

Nina’s passion for art, new media and social learning led her to found Assemble, a community space for arts + technology, in 2011. On her own, Nina works in a variety of media including architecture, film, sound, and installation and often explores the idea of recycling noise into a system or elevating the vernacular to the spectacular. Nina co-founded I Made It! Market in 2007. An idea based on urban acupuncture, this nomadic market partners with community, arts and non-profit organizations to raise funds and awareness to assist in improving their communities while allowing local artists and crafters to sell their wares. Nina holds degrees in architecture from Southern California Institute of Architecture and Carnegie Mellon University, where she is also an adjunct faculty.
